What are coupling sleeves?

Coupling sleeves are female connectors installed on top-hammer drill string and connect between a shank adapter and an extension rod, or between two extension rods. The coupling sleeves can also connect between drill-string components with different thread types or sizes.

Coupling sleeves not only serve as connecting parts, but also transmit impact energy, rotary torque and axial load during drilling processes. The coupling sleeves also help keep coaxial alignment among adjacent drill rods.

Features
  • International standard threads, precisely machined for perfect compatibility, ensuring a secure and reliable connection.
  • Employing special carburization processes, our coupling sleeves exhibit exceptional wear resistance, extending their service life.
  • Customizable length and thread specifications, catering to unique customer requirements.
  • Ensuring safety and stability, our coupling sleeves deliver reliable performance, guaranteeing operational efficiency and safety during construction.
Starockdrill offers three types of coupling sleeves
  • Semi-Bridge Coupling Sleeves: Widely applicable for high-torque drilling machines, these sleeves feature threaded ends to securely connect two drill rods.
  • Full-Bridge Coupling Sleeves: Eliminating any concerns of loose connections, these sleeves provide superior stability and are easily detachable during open-pit mining operations, ensuring a robust connection.
  • Reducer Coupling Sleeves: Ideal for transitioning between different thread types and sizes of drill rods, these sleeves accommodate diverse drilling requirements.
The importance of compatible threads and axial alignment

It’s important for coupling Sleeves to share compatible threads with shank adapters and extension rods. Otherwise, mismatch, misalignment or differences in wear can cause uneven distribution of load, loose connection, damaged threads or fractured drill rod.

The axial alignment between inner and outer circles and between threads of two ends will affect drill-string rotational stability. Axial misalignment can cause runout, vibration and localized bending loads.

How to use coupling sleeves

Before use, you should clean the coupling sleeves, removing dust, sand or rust. Then you must check coupling sleeves and drill-rod threads for cracks, galling or other forms of wear.

During use, you must apply right lubricants based on drilling tools. And you must avoid reverse rotation during percussion drilling.

In cases of cracks, visible deforming, severe wear or other problems causing unstable connection, you must stop operations and replace the coupling sleeves.

Pairing coupling sleeves with severely worn drill rods will cause coupling sleeves to be worn faster.
