The HVAC expansion tank serves to absorb the expanded volume of water due to thermal expansion in the air conditioning system so that the system pressure stays relatively the same throughout the heating or cooling cycle. Pressure increase inside the air conditioning system is likely to cause stagnation, a situation where no water enters the system for heat exchange.
In most cases, the HVAC expansion tank should work together with the automatic vent valve, makeup water valve, and the safety valve to keep system pressure at a normal level. In a residential central air conditioning system, the expansion tank is connected to the pipe of heat transfer medium on one side, and the other side contains air. As the system pressure increases to a point greater than the pre-charged air pressure in the tank, some amounts of heat transfer medium, water for example, enters the tank to offset that pressure increase. On the other hand, when the system pressure drops, the precharged air inside the tank pushes some water out into the system to make up for the pressure loss. This cycle repeats throughout the heat exchange process to maintain a constant pressure in the air conditioning system.
