Direct acting (direct operated) solenoid valves: when the coil is energized, an electromagnetic field is created. This attracts plunger up, overcomes the spring force, opens the orifice and allows the media to flow through; When the coil is de-energized, the valve is closed.

Diaphragm type solenoid valves are most commonly associated with 2-way solenoid valves. They generally consist of a rubber diaphragm which moves up or down within a valve body. when the coil is energized, an electromagnetic field is created. This attracts plunger up, overcomes the spring force, opens the orifice and allows the media to flow through; When the coil is de-energized, the valve is closed.
