Non-halogen fire retardant, smoke suppressant additives and fillers for plastics, rubber, coatings and cable insulation

Magnesium hydroxide, also known as brucite (Mg(OH)₂), is a non-halogen flame retardant and smoke suppressant used in industries such as plastics, rubber, polyurethane (PU), fibers, and coatings. Derived from minerals like magnesite and dolomite, our magnesium hydroxide undergoes an advanced process of purification, fine grinding, and surface treatment to ensure high whiteness, fine particle size, and efficient flame retardancy. With nearly 30 years of experience in the field, our company has become one of the key contributors to the development of national standards for magnesium hydroxide flame retardants in China.

Specifications
  • Appearance: white or light green powder
  • Whiteness: 90-95%
  • Specific Gravity: 2.36
  • Particle Size (D50): 2.5μm - 10μm
  • Chemical Analysis: MgO≥60%, SiO₂≤4%, CaO≤4%, Al₂O₃≤0.5%, Fe₂O₃≤0.5%
How it Works

Magnesium hydroxide begins to decompose at around 340°C, absorbing a substantial amount of heat, which helps to slow down the burning process. By 430°C, it fully decomposes into magnesium oxide (MgO), a material with a large surface area that helps absorb smoke and reduce the concentration of flammable gases. This process creates a protective char layer that increases the material's resistance to fire by cutting off the supply of oxygen. In addition, the water vapor released during decomposition acts as both a cooling agent and a dilutant, reducing the amount of smoke produced. This makes magnesium hydroxide an excellent choice as an inorganic, halogen-free flame retardant, providing heat absorption, smoke suppression, and fire retardancy without emitting toxic or corrosive gases.

Features
  • Magnesium hydroxide is an eco-friendly flame retardant, neutralizing acidic and corrosive gases produced during combustion, making it a green and safe option for various applications
  • This flame retardant works well in engineering plastics that require processing temperatures above 250°C. Additionally, it promotes char formation, enhancing the fire resistance of the polymer
  • By applying advanced coating technology, the surface of Mg(OH)₂ is modified to improve its compatibility with polymers, ensuring better integration into various materials
  • Our magnesium hydroxide can undergo custom surface treatments based on specific requirements, offering tailored solutions to meet the needs of different applications
Applications

Magnesium hydroxide flame retardant is widely used in the production of various materials, including copper-clad laminates (CCL), aluminum composite panels (ACP), low-smoke halogen-free cable materials, wood-plastic composites (WPC), conveyor belts, plastics, and coatings. Its versatility makes it an ideal solution for enhancing fire resistance in multiple industries.
