The purpose of a ball mill in ceramics manufacturing is to mix and grind different glaze ingredients to make fine glazes. The amount of glaze and water that are added to the ball mill should be in proportion to the mass of steel balls. After that, the feed inlet is closed and the motor starts spinning the rotary drum via a gear box and belt drive. As the drum rotates, glaze materials and steel balls are raised to a great height before falling back onto the drum wall. This cycle repeats itself until materials are ball-milled to a required particle size.

Note the ball mill is also the critical equipment in making ceramic slurries (ceramic slips). Spray drying is next which dries the slurry into ceramic powder. A compactor is used to press powders into ceramic tiles or slabs which are then sent to a dryer for drying and a roller kiln for firing.
