Hyperboloid Contacts
The hyperboloid contact or, hyperbolic lamella socket to be more precise, is a high-reliability socket connector that falls into the category of plug and socket. Inside the socket is a grid of multiple flexible gold-plated or silver-plated metal wires twisted into a hyperbolic geometry. When a pin is inserted into the socket, the twisted wire contacts draw elastic deformation in both axial and radial directions. At this point, the pin makes contact with a number of independent wires included in the hyperbolic lamella, which in turn forms multiple separate electrical circuits. One advantage of providing multiple points of contact is that the electrical circuit could still work properly and continuously even when individual wires snap.
Characteristics of Hyperboloid Contact
Characteristics of hyperboloid contacts include: low insertion force, minimum contact resistance and high reliability. As the pin goes into the socket, it is tightly wrapped around by resilient metal wires thereby forming multiple electrical connections. One such mating pair is equivalent to several pairs of ordinary pins and sockets working in parallel. Hence, using hyperboloid contacts greatly improves contact reliability.
Other benefits involved in the use of hyperbolic lamella socket include: consistent contact resistance, low wear rate, long service life, and high resistance to vibration and shock. The hyperbolic lamella socket shows no discontinuities for more than 1 µs.
Applications of Hyperboloid Contact
The hyperbolic lamella socket works greatly for demanding applications that require precision and reliability, such as in aerospace, weapons, medical equipment, automotive electronics test, railway locomotive, electronic communications, intelligent equipment, petroleum, chemical engineering, and exploration industries.
