Mineral Insulated (MI) cables are high-performance cables designed for extreme environmental conditions. They consist of metal conductors embedded in compressed mineral insulation material (usually magnesium oxide, MgO) and are encased in a metal sheath. MI cables are used in applications requiring high-temperature resistance, fireproofing, or corrosion resistance.

MI cable structure
  • Metal Conductors: Copper, stainless steel, Inconel, or other alloys
  • Insulation: Magnesium oxide (MgO) is the most common insulating material
  • Metal Sheath: Provides mechanical protection and shields the internal conductors
Standards and certifications

MI cables meet the following international standards:

  • IEC 60702
  • BS 6387
  • NEC

Features
  • High temperature resistance: Can withstand temperatures up to 1,000°C (1,832°F) or higher, depending on the materials used
  • Fire resistance: MI cables maintain functionality during and after exposure to fire, making them ideal for critical systems such as emergency circuits
  • Corrosion resistance: When using appropriate sheath materials, MI cables perform well in corrosive environments, including marine and chemical industries
  • Mechanical strength: Resistant to crushing, bending, and other physical stresses
  • Longevity: Due to the stability of the materials used, MI cables do not age and are highly durable
  • Moisture resistance: Compressed MgO has strong resistance to moisture infiltration
Applications
  • Industrial processes: High-temperature equipment, furnaces, or kilns
  • Fire safety: Emergency systems (e.g., fire alarms, smoke exhaust systems, exit lighting)
  • Oil and gas: Pipeline monitoring and wellhead heating
  • Marine and offshore: Corrosion-resistant installations on ships or oil drilling platforms
  • Nuclear facilities: Radiation-resistant wiring for critical systems
  • Building infrastructure: Fire-resistant cables for modern skyscrapers and tunnels
