Structure of Telecom Equipment Cable Assemblies
Conductor
  • Material

    High-purity copper (OFC) and silver-plated copper help minimize high-frequency signal loss by improving surface conductivity.

  • Structure

    Solid or stranded. Solid conductors provide better phase stability, while stranded conductors offer greater flexibility.

Insulation Layer (Dielectric)
  • Function

    Holds the inner conductor in place and keeps it centered inside the outer conductor. It also affects how much signal is lost and what the cable impedance is.

  • Material

    Made of solid polyethylene (PE), Teflon (PTFE), or foamed polyethylene (Foamed PE). The foamed type has many air pockets, which help reduce signal loss.

Outer Conductor (Shielding Layer)
  • Function

    Acts as the signal return path and provides protection against electromagnetic interference.

  • Structure

    1. Braided shield: One or more layers of woven copper wires, offering flexibility and durability.
    2. Foil shield: Aluminum-polyester tape wrapping that gives high coverage but is less flexible.
    3. Combined shield: The common “foil braid” design offers both full coverage and good flexibility. When used for demanding use, double or triple shields can be applied.
Jacket (Outer Sheath)
  • Function: Provides mechanical protection and environmental resistance.
  • Material: PVC, PE, low-smoke halogen-free flame-retardant polyolefin (LSZH), or polyurethane (PUR).
  • LSZH materials are especially important for server rooms and indoor use, as they emit minimal smoke and no toxic gases when burned.
Connectors
  • RF Connectors: SMA, SMB, N-type, TNC, BNC, 7/16 DIN (used for base stations), etc.
  • High-Speed Data Connectors: RJ45, SFP , QSFP , DAC (Direct Attach Cable), etc.
  • Data Transmission Connectors: USB, Type-C, Micro USB, etc.
