Calcite Dichroscope
Gemstones can exhibit subtle color changes when viewed from different angles, a phenomenon known as pleochroism. Calcite dichroscopes help gemologists detect these variations by filtering light and separating the different hues present in a gemstone. Unlike other instruments such as refractometers or polariscopes, which focus on refractive properties, dichroscopes specifically highlight optical characteristics that aid in gemstone identification.
Suitable for distinguishing gemstones with similar colors. For example, they can help differentiate rubies from red glass, as natural rubies display pleochroism while glass does not. Similarly, they assist in identifying emeralds compared to green glass, which lacks the pleochroic effect seen in natural emeralds. Peridot and yellow-green tourmaline can also be distinguished, as tourmaline exhibits stronger pleochroism. By revealing these subtle optical differences, calcite dichroscopes provide a fast and effective way to analyze gemstones.

Dimensions | 20×55×70mm |
Weight | 70g |
Packaging | Leather case |
- High-quality calcite elements for clear and sharp imaging
- Large lens for clear and detailed observation
- Black coating to reduce light reflection and interference
- Objective lens in standard rectangular
- Equipped with a stand; gemstone and dichroscope can rotate 360° and gemstone can be adjusted vertically to achieve optimal focus
- ① Dichroscope Tube
Designed to rotate, allowing adjustments for clearer pleochroic observations. The tube must be turned to find the position where the pleochroic effect is most evident.
- ② Objective lens
Viewed through the eyepiece, the gemstone’s image is split into two distinct colors by the dichroscope. Comparing these hues helps identify pleochroism and determine the stone’s optical properties.
- ③ Gem Holder Rod
Features an adhesive tip to securely hold gemstones in place. The base is equipped with a non-slip rotating wheel, allowing 360° rotation for precise positioning and easy handling.
- ④ Support Stand
Provides stability and eliminates the need to hold gemstones with tweezers, preventing instability. It is designed with an open middle section for a comfortable grip and reduced weight, making it easier to use for extended periods.
