The magnesium chloride hexahydrate, also known as bischofite, is in the form of white crystal with bitter taste. It is soluble in water and ethanol, and deliquescent under very humid conditions. The magnesium chloride hexahydrate decomposes at 116 ~ 118 ℃, and turns into magnesium cement if mixed with water and magnesium oxide. It can react with the hydroxide of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal.

5. Usage
The magnesium chloride hexahydrate can be used for the following purposes:
a) as adhesive for manufacturing refractory materials and lining furnace walls; raw material for manufacturing fluxing agent No.2 and smelting magnesium;
b) mainly used for the production of magnesium salts, such as magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, and firecracker solid lead agent; also used as antifreeze material;
c) added with magnesite (MgO), the magnesium chloride hexahydrate can be made into hard corrosion-resistant magnesia cement, which can be further made into artificial marbles, magnesite tiles, floors, ceilings, decorative panels, fire panels, greenhouse brackets, inorganic glass greenhouse frames,magnesite insulation sheds, wave tiles, ventilation pipes, wall panels, magnesite covers, baths, door frames, and mobile homes, etc; used as antifreeze agent in winter construction;
d) as protein coagulant; the tofu made with brine (food grade magnesium chloride solution) tastes more tender and delicious that those made with plaster; also used as additive for some food;
e) as deicer, which has efficient deicing performance and causes less corrosion to vehicles, better than the effect of sodium chloride;
f) used for producing magnesium fertilizer, potassium and magnesium fertilizer and cotton defoliant;
g) as coal fire retardant, road dust preventive, soil stabilizer.
6. Storage and Handling
The magnesium chloride hexahydrate should be store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. The container must be sealed to prevent moisture. Pile it separately from deliquescent goods.
