Nitric Oxide (NO)
Nitric oxide is an inorganic compound, appearing as a colorless gas at standard temperature and pressure. It is sparingly soluble in water but soluble in ethyl alcohol and carbon disulfide. At room temperature, NO readily oxidizes to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and reacts with halogens to form nitrogen oxyhalides (NOX). Nitric Oxide finds applications in semiconductor production for oxidation and chemical vapor deposition processes, atmospheric monitoring as a standard gas mixture, and in the manufacture of nitric acid, silicon oxide films, and nitrosyl carbonyl. It is used as a bleaching agent for synthetic silk and as a stabilizer for propylene (C3H6) and dimethyl ether. In medical clinical experiments, it serves as an adjunct for diagnosis and treatment, as well as a stabilizer in organic reactions.
